Record Companies

XL is an independent record label that was created as an offshoot of Beggars Banquet (also a record label). Richard Russel owns it. The label is quite small, releasing on average 6 albums a year but have worked with any successful acts, such as; The Prodigy, Beck, The White Stripes, Vampire Weekend, Dizzee Rascal and The XX. It started as a dance label in the late 80’s/ early 90’s. The 2000’s changed this when various genres were released. It is estimated that 15 employees work for this company.

The warp label was started at the same time as XL but is a label dedicated exclusively to dance music. Three founding members who saw that there was a lack of opportunity for dance musicians to express themselves founded it. It has released chart successes as well as cult classics and has since them early beginnings turned into a multi-formatted company; producing movies, TV shows and music videos. In 2004, they sign their first indie band; Maximo Park.

DFA is an American independent record label but it has a distribution deal with the multi nation conglomerate EMI. They are label that sign bands that are of an indie/dance orientation. Their debut single release sold 7500. As a label they produce remixes of bands from all over the globe and also produce their records. They do all of this t reach the biggest audience that they possibly can.

Research into the field of record comapnies and the logo's that they have is something that I thought was necessary so that I could gain some knowledge of what a record company logo should look like. I  chose to take inspiration from the top two companies; with the bold and stand out shapes. I was not a fan of the last logo in the context of my product but that is not to say that I don't like it. The use of a shape a the background with overlaid text on the second design was also an inspiration as my product does this.
